Tall Men's Clothing with Altitutude - Alto Clothing (UK)

UPDATE: January 2021 - It is with regret that we note that Alto Clothing is closing down and all remaining stock must be sold. Head over there for some final bargains. It is sad to see another tall clothing business close down.

Alto Clothing is a UK online store for tall men's clothing, cut for slimmer people. They offer extra long inseam jeans but more importantly, some difficult-to-find tall items like tall hoodies, sweaters and other tops. Alto focuses on affordable clothing on the principle that "value is just as important to you as availability. If you're used to paying premium prices for your clothes, you'll be pleased to know that our commitment is to offer you hard to find tall men's clothing priced as competitively as we can".

Alto caters for tall men from 6ft 3in (1.9m) and have an inseam (inside leg) of over 34in (86cm) and a waist size up to 40in (102cm). They offer waist sizes starting at 30in (76cm) and inseams up to 38in (97cm). Alto focuses more on height than width, with a range of tall trousers and jeans that start at smaller waist sizes (30 inches) than usually found in the shops.

Prices are extremely reasonable although without having ordered from them myself, I cannot comment on quality. Delivery in the UK is not expensive and Alto Clothing also delivers to the US, EU, Australia and New Zealand for 10-15 British pounds per order.

Tall skiing jackets for men

Mount Rigi, Switzerland

Finding a new skiing jacket was long overdue as my baggy old XL jacket was starting to look decrepit as well as badly fitting. As ever, the challenge was to find one that fits and looks good. After fruitlessly scouring endless sports shops, ordering online seemed to be the only practical option. Always keen to find the widest options for tall men, I searched and directly contacted many outdoor apparel stores and I am happy to share with you my best finds. If you have found other options yourself, do let me know.

Meanwhile, as the ski season draws to a close for 2019, get ready for some discounts on last year's stock and to get in early on the limited tall sizes for the 2019/2020 season!

Columbia Sportswear

After exploring various options I opted for the tried and trusted, since my old jacket was from Columbia. Since humble beginnings in 1938, Columbia Sportswear has become one of the largest "outdoor and active lifestyle" companies in the world with sales of $2.8 billion in 2018. For such a large company, however, their tall range is good but not outstanding.

I am extremely happy with the Whirlibird III Interchange jacket that I bought. The 3-in-1 design means it has an inner jacket that is great for mild weather while the ski jacket served me well for a week in Austria when the wind chill was -16'C and the snow was driving horizontally. As you can see from the photo at the bottom of this article, the Large Tall size was plenty long enough for me at 6'5".

Summit Sports offers a broad range of tall sizes as well as big & tall with good discounts. Their stock is not always latest season but this does mean there is a good choice from multiple product ranges. Delivery outside the US is possible but very expensive. The Columbia web site also offers the current season's styles in all sizes. The stock for 'special' sizes like Tall appears to be very limited and is only available on the US site for US delivery, not any of their international sites.

Obermeyer

For over 75 years, Obermeyer has emphasized “fit” to ensure the ultimate performance between design and function. Founded and headquartered in Aspen, Colorado, the company is conscious of the environment and the main Obermeyer office is an award-winning “green” complex that receives 60% of its heat from solar energy. The clothing is also high-tech, incorporating weatherproof technology, lightweight insulation, specialty fabrics, innovative styling, and individualized features "to simply make being outside feel better".

Maier Sports

A German brand, Maier Sports does offer some extra tall sizes. Look for the filter "Long" in the size menu that shows products in sizes 94 (tall slim) to 122 (4XLT). However, they do not sell directly and tall sizes appear not to be widely available online. The web site will also direct you to a local store (in mainland Europe) from where you can order their products directly.

An easier solution might be to check Highley Tall, a UK online shop that specialises in tall sizes. They sometimes stock styles from Maier Sports.

38 inch inseam pants at Sierra Trading Post

It is possibly the only connection I have ever had with Wyoming. Sierra Trading Post was founded there in 1986 and has grown to sell $200 million a year of clothing - mainly reduced cost closeouts and seconds, with a focus on outdoor clothing. To a tall person who is not picky about the latest fashion, that is exactly the recipe for bargain hunting.

Most of the time on Sierra Trading Post I am looking for outdoor clothing but there is often a reasonable selection of casual clothing and its always worth checking for tall sizes. Right now, there is a good selection of at least a dozen pairs of jeans with 38 inch inseams and even more with 36 inch inseam. There is always a bit of a lucky dip feeling, because the selection of waist sizes is limited and a bit random but you'll probably find something in your size.

Right now, the denim brands that are available are the usual ones with tall sizes; Stetson, Rock & Roll Cowboy, Wrangler and Carhartt. There are also chinos from Hiltl and Toad & Co. However, the nature of close-outs is that stock changes quickly so check regularly for new options.

Yikes! It's Yoox for tall men

It's been a while but while casting around for some winter gear (more to come on that in a later post) I noticed a few 36 inch denim options at yoox, a site that offers reductions on some more premium denim brands. With no further ado, I invite you to take a look at some of their current selection, which includes Dockers, Tommy Hilfiger Denim amongst other brands. You'll have to filter and search for the affordable options amongst the smaller sized designer stuff. The company is based in Italy and delivery to US is $9.95.

Back to School - Tall Ties for Tall Men

It's not often I wear a tie these days, even working in a corporate office. But every now and then I need to smarten up for a special meeting and it's good to have a selection at hand. As autumn / fall approaches, jackets come back out of the wardrobes and ties are maybe a little more in evidence. Styles change as well, so investing in a new tie every now and then will make sure you have something up-to-the-minute.

Just one tip for tall men though - avoid skinny ties. This is always good advice for anyone in my personal opinion, but particularly for tall men it could make you look even taller and accentuate your slimness. The other point is always to go for silk, except if you are looking at the currently popular trend for matte, textured ties that might be in wool or even cotton.

For a wide selection of ties in extra long (64 inches - which is actually taller than a lot of people!) in silk and other materials you can try Ties.com. These are reasonably priced and there is a wide range of styles. Pictured below are some plain tie colours but this is more for visual effect than anything else - I personally prefer my ties in stripes or patterns and if they are plain to have some detail or texture to break up the solid colour.

On that note, Nordstrom has a selection of different styles of extra long ties for those whose budget stretches (no pun intended!) to the $50 - $150 range. Having shopped there myself earlier this year I can certainly vouch for the quality.

A last but important note is the tie knot itself. Four tie knots are typically used. However, the scientifically curious or those who want to make an impression may note that there are many more ways to tie a tie if you set your mind to it. Anyone inclined to try something new may enjoy the paper "Designing tie knots by random walks" from researchers at the University of Cambridge.

38 Inseam Tall Men's Jeans at Zappos

At Clothing Tall Men we regularly check back for new tall bargains on our favourite sites. This month we were rewarded with a selection of tall jeans from fashion denim brands at Zappos, including Stetson, Ariat, Cinch and others. You might already have noticed a theme with these names - the brands that offer very long inseam (38 inch and sometimes up to 40 or 42 inch) are Western inspired.

Pictured below is a handful of examples. Stock at Zappos changes regularly, so whether you're after higher end designer labels or more affordable denim, now is a good time to look. They also have tons of choice for the 'usual' long inseam brands like Levi's and Tommy Bahama.

Tall Cargo Pants in slim or big waist sizes

As soon as Clothing Tall Men received a note from an anguished (or at least mildly disappointed) reader noting the difficulty of finding tall (not big) cargo pants, we swung into action to see what we could find.

Originally used by the British army, cargo pants are frequently called combat trousers and have also evolved into a version called tactical pants that are widely used by police. The main feature is an extra set of large pockets on the legs for carrying equipment - originally for medical supplies, now for important things like smartphones. Although the original color was khaki, there are now variations in browns, greens, blues and black.

So here's the bad news. If you're slimmish and need anything longer than a 36 inch inseam then as far as we can tell right now, your choice appears to be limited to the no-nonsense Dickie's Industrial Relaxed Fit Cotton Cargo Pant. It also comes in cotton/polyester and Tactical rip-stop versions that really are work-wear not casual wear but I guess that's the point of cargo pants. There are straight and relaxed fit variations and four colors.

For the longest inseam, you will need to choose UL, which is an unhemmed 39 inch inseam that should give a little over 38 inches if hemmed carefully. That option is available in waist 30 - 38 inches. Perhaps the best news is that these are cheap! Around $40 for a pair of tall pants in cotton is not a bad thing and they look pretty solid according to the specifications and the reviewer comments.

You could also try the Tactical Cargo Pants from Tru-Spec. These basic tactical pants are constructed with cost in mind but still didn’t forget the needs of the wearer. They are available in Big & Tall sizing that offers unhemmed inseams up to 42” long in waist sizes from 28 inches to 60 inches. They are definitely on the work-wear side, with tough cotton/polyester construction and plenty of seams. Other styles from Tru-Spec have unhemmed styles up to 37 inches inseam.

For those who have the luxury of needing "only" a 36 inch inseam and a normal waist, you are spoilt for choice. Which, for tall people, means having a choice at all. Read on for more details. And for those who need a longer inseam but have a larger waist (classic Big & Tall) we've also highlighted a couple of options for you below.

Tall Outerwear from Free Country

Since 1990, Free Country has manufactured casual outerwear and active wear inspired by a modern, active lifestyle - creating compelling designs through a fusion of active performance and fashion. The aim is to create "authentic outerwear with a not-too-serious attitude, that people will have fun wearing".

Beyond the marketing blurb, however, Free Country has established itself as a reliable source of up-to-date, affordable outdoor basics, just the thing you need if you are after some everyday outdoor gear. The tall sizes offer an extra couple of inches on the arm and body in their Tall sizes. These range from Large (chest 42 inches and upwards) up to 4XL with around 15 styles in this extended size range.

Orvis Tall Men's Polo Shirts

Use the code FALL25 now and you can benefit from $25 off any purchase of $50 or more at Orvis (expires Oct 5th). Even better, you can get three for the price of two on both types of polo shirt up until the end of December! As we head into fall, their long sleeve polos and warm flannel shirts are just the thing to ward off the morning chills.

Orvis is well known for its outdoor and sporting clothing and it is one of few mail order / internet companies to offer tall sizes, which are available for their most popular items, like the Orvis "Signature" range.

Their shirts in flannel or cotton with 20% merino wool are just the thing for cooling weather and for some shirts, tall sizes are an impressive 3" longer in sleeves and 3.5" longer in body! Tall polos offer an extra 1-1.5 inches on sleeves and 1.5 inches on the length of the classic fit polo shirts, which already have neat features like a longer body and reinforced tail to tuck in neatly.

Still need more options to choose from?

Custom Shirts for Tall Men : You'll never look back!

A recent trip to Stockholm reminded why it is one of my favorite cities. Apart from the extremely expensive beer and a long dreary winter, the city has pretty much everything going for it. It's a fabulous place to visit in summer and, more relevant to this blog, Sweden has some great clothing options for tall men, including the rather delightful tall store So Long Sven.

One of my best Swedish discoveries is the online custom clothing store (un)imaginatively named Tailor Store. Custom clothing promises to make a real difference for those of us tall men, or indeed any men, who find that typical store sizes don't fit well. Which must be anyone over about 6'4"! While I have tried shirts from a few different sites (and I'll write about them too when I have time), Tailor Store has become my first go-to place for shirts and I have ordered more than half a dozen in the last few years.

All sites make a great thing about the simple process of designing your shirt. Still, the ones that take more measurements should offer a more personalised fit and Tailor Store requires ten measurements to ensure you get a great fit. Once these measurements are stored, ordering a new shirt is as easy as choosing a pattern and a style before buying but first time round, it took me (and a helper) about 15 minutes to measure carefully (twice!) each of the ten measurements that are required for a shirt fitting. This is probably my background as a scientist showing through but fifteen minutes is not a big commitment to get a well fitting shirt. Keen to ensure that the shirt was long enough I was generous with the length measurements "just to make sure" and ordered a fabric that was on sale to minimise damage to my wallet in case of disaster. I went too far on the length but luckily, this was not a problem . . .

Revisiting the men's tall jeans selection at Sheplers

The last time I wrote about Sheplers was back in 2010 (see here) so I thought it was worth going back to see whether they still offer the same wide selection for tall men. I wouldn't be writing this post if they didn't.

Their range of brands is heavily geared towards the traditional Western style rather than trendy distressed denim with fancy labels. However, with a range of prices from $20 to $75, you can get everything from a reliable pair of everyday jeans to the higher end brands of Ariat, Stetson or Rock & Roll Cowboy that offer a bit more style. And with well over 100 styles in a 36 inch inseam and at least 40 styles with a 38 inch inseam, you have a good chance of finding something you like!

Silver Jeans : 36 inch inseam in many styles

Silver Jeans Co. is a family-owned, Canadian denim brand that fills a gap between premium (i.e. expensive!) denim and 'standard' store bought jeans. They call it 'mid luxury' with a blend of modern and vintage details with intricate washes and creative designs. Aimed at customers who are conscious of cost as well as fashion, Silver Jeans offers the latest styles and best quality at a reasonable price. Even better, a range of styles with 36 inch inseam means that tall men can find fashionable jeans at a good price!

We've shown a couple of styles for tall men below, but right now you'll find a variety of jeans styles with a long inseam available on the web site, all for less than $110.

Delivery is free via ground shipping for delivery in the US or Canada. Delivery is also possible to Japan and some countries in Europe. Items can be returned for a full refund within 30 days.

Plus Two Clothing : Street Fashion for Tall Men

Finding a new option for clothing tall men is always a plus. Even more so when it is a business run by tall people for tall people. Enter Plus 2 Clothing.

Plus 2 Clothing is an Australian clothing label that began in 2013 by Josh & Steve, two tall, slim guys who were fed up with how hard it was to find clothing that fit. In their native Australia, it felt that there was a real lack of “fashionable” clothing aimed at taller, slimmer built men under 40.

As Steve tells, it "with this in mind we set about to design our first tall tee. Of course, it took a fair few attempts before we were 100% happy. We paid particular attention to making it a heavyweight pre-shrunk cotton so that it was not only breathable material but also wouldn’t shrink in the wash - if you're a tall bloke there isn’t much worse than your t-shirts shrinking in the wash. We also knew our target market would be mainly people with an athletic/sporty build, so we wanted to make sure that the stitching would hold up when playing sport or working out. We have since created a range of tall hoodies, jackets and are now focusing on tall button-ups and even pants which we hope to launch in the coming months".

Teal Apparel - Extra Long Chinos for men 6 feet and taller

Teal Apparel is one of a growing number of specialist clothing brands set up to cater for the needs of tall men.

These brands are typically set up by families who have experienced the struggle to find decent quality and fit for tall clothes and the Lallier family that set up Teal Apparel in 2010 is no exception. The ambition is to produce a line of affordable tall and long men offerings that place a premium on fit, function and form. For good measure, Teal aims to make absolutely certain to utilize only the finest materials and manufacture all of their range in the USA.

Benefitting from previous experience in the clothing industry, Teal Apparel works in close conjunction with a New York-based design team to eliminate the compromise "that has always been the rock in every tall man’s shoe" when it comes to shopping for clothes.

The current range comprises chinos in classic khaki as well as a range of more adventurous colors - stone, red, blue, black and gray. In line with the "tall not large" philosophy, waist sizes range from 32 to 38 inches and the inseam is 40 inches, which can be finished according to individual needs. Prices are currently around $90 per pair.
